California’s 2026-27 budget was released today. While it protects key behavioral health investments, federal funding cuts are putting crisis response at risk. When enhanced federal Medicaid funding expires in 2027, mobile crisis response may become an optional benefit—shifting costs to counties and putting service continuity at risk across California. Mobile crisis teams and 988 ensure people experiencing behavioral health crises are met by the right responders, at the right time, and in the right setting.
