Here at your Toronto Zoo, Animal Welfare Science transforms behavioural observations into meaningful, impactful, and proactive advancements that reflect our leadership in achieving optimal animal well-being. In recognition of this work, your Toronto Zoo was awarded the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) Animal Welfare Award last year, solidifying our position as a global leader in animal welfare. In 2025, our Welfare Science team completed over 3,000 behavioural monitoring sessions using ZooMonitor, a digital system for standardized data collection and behavioural analysis. This work supported 30 behavioural monitoring projects across 32 species and 65 individual animals, allowing us to uncover valuable insights into behaviour and well-being. We also collected and coded over 900 hours of video footage, which has allowed us to further support optimal 24/7 well-being.
