New year, new calves! “Boomerang” welcomed the first North Atlantic right whale calf of 2026! Then “Skittle” was sighted with her third known calf. This is a hopeful sign given her two past calves did not survive. Catalog #3593 may not have been given a name yet, but she is well known for her mysterious existence. First spotted over 21 years ago as a grown adult, she remained quite elusive until she popped back up in 2021 with a calf before ghosting scientists again. [ghost emoji?] That was until a few days ago when she resurfaced with a brand-new calf! To round out the good news, we celebrate North Atlantic right whale Catalog #4610, who is the youngest mom of the season at only 10 years old! Keep it up, mamas!
