This is the program cover for the first ever Philadelphia Inquirer Open Invitational, Torresdale’s second PGA Tour event held in 1944. Bobby Jones was featured on the cover in uniform during WW2. The event helped raised money for war bonds, but was postponed one day due to the invasion of France by allied troops. Sam Byrd won this event, who was also a Major League Baseball player who played with Babe Ruth for the New York Yankees. Byrd was nicknamed “Babe Ruth’s legs” because he often was Ruth’s pinch runner later in Ruth’s career.
