"I was going through my son's Valentines from his class party at school and came across this one. It broke my heart, and then pieced it back together.
Being neurodivergent in a world not made to adequately accept and support you is exhausting. Physically. Mentally. Spiritually.
Like most parents, one of my main worries is that my child won't find a place to belong. To be seen and accepted. Neurodivergence adds a different dimension to this worry and compounds it. However, this Valentine's Day gives me hope.
Hope that as I talk with my child about self-acceptance, another child is being taught about accepting others that are different from the neuro-majority.
Hope that as I work with my child on self-regulation and making it right when his big feelings impact others, another child is learning that everyone's growth unfolds in their own time.
Hope that there are other teachers like my child's that work tirelessly to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
