Growing up, Kenya Buckley didn't know the words "sickle cell disease," but she did know that her mother Carol was always sick and there was no widely available cure for her illness. In 2005, just two weeks after her college graduation, Carol passed away due to complications from sickle cell disease. Even in her grief, Kenya knew that she would never stop being an advocate for people just like her mom. In 2017, she started CarolsPromise, an organization that works to increase the quality of life for those living with sickle cell disease.
Patients with sickle cell can require as many as 100 units of blood each year. 🩸 To complicate matters, frequent transfusions can make finding compatible blood types more difficult – patients can develop an immune response against blood from donors that is not closely matched to the blood of the recipient.
