Say hello to the artist behind three notable Red Cross paintings during #WWI: ✨ Henry Ossawa Tanner. ✨ Henry was a prominent African American artist, who was permitted by the Army’s Photographic Censorship Office and the Red Cross' Bureau of Photography to exclusively sketch Red Cross activities and subjects during the war in Neufchâteau, France. In his work, he not only captured our mission in action but also featured brave African American troops who were serving on the front lines of the war. Throughout his life, Henry broke many racial barriers. ➡️ He became one of the first African American students at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later, was the first African-American artist to have one of his works included in the White House’s permanent collection when they acquired in 1996.
