January 13th is National Public Radio Broadcasting Day! On this day in 1910, the first radio broadcast in the United States took place in New York during a live performance at the Metropolitan Opera House. While we don’t think too much about radio for entertainment these days, radio had its beginnings in Sacramento 104 years ago. The radio station KVQ 833 AM debuted on February 2, 1922 its first broadcast, making it the first radio station in Sacramento. The radio studio was in the Sacramento Bee’s headquarters on 7th Street between I and J Streets. By the end of the year, the radio station went off the air when other stations with stronger signals were broadcasted. For today, Jared letterpress printed an image from a roughly 85 year old photo engraving of a radio announcer. Below the image states, “National Public Radio Broadcasting Day.” The font used is 24 point Caslon.
