In a recent court hearing, the NCAA has agreed to pay $303 million to settle a class action antitrust lawsuit representing about 7,700 volunteer college coaches who filed suit claiming the NCAA engaged in illegal wage fixing by enforcing a rule that prohibited schools from paying them. From 1992-2023, the NCAA capped the number of paid coaches allowed on staff, and allowed certain sport teams one volunteer coach, who would not be paid and was restricted from receiving other benefits. It well/known in the coaching profession that taking a volunteer position is almost a requirement for climbing the ladder in the coaching world. Yet, this puts aspiring coaches in a tough financial position, often forcing them out of the profession altogether.
