On January 11, 1992, Nirvana performed live on U.S. television for the first time for their Saturday Night Live debut. It was just a few months after 'Nevermind' came out and on the day of this performance, the album topped Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' for the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts. Nirvana performed the obvious hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but chose “Territorial Pissings” as their second song—a risky move given that it's arguably the most feral song on 'Nevermind.' NBC was reportedly nervous about the choice, but the band refused to swap it out for something more palatable. It was a chaotic night. Nirvana didn't do the formal rehearsal that producers wanted, Kurt's voice was fried from a week of being sick, Dave broke a drum stick within the first 20 seconds, equipment was smashed, and Krist kissed Kurt during the show's outro, a moment that was later cut from reruns. Oh, and Kurt shooks hands with Chris Farley. __ #pigeonsandplanes #snl #nirvana #kurt...
