Yesterday, members of our department attended the Az_firefighters Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona memorial service to recognize Arizona’s fallen firefighters. Our department honored our own Firefighter Mark Keller and Engineer Paul Shupe (2025). As well as Captains Ron Bird (1990), Pat Brown (2007), and Charles Inman (1996). This year, fourteen names were added to the memorial, bringing the total to 181 Arizona firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This memorial, the names and number of those lost, personalizes and highlights January as #FireFighterCancerAwarenessMonth. More than 79% of line-of-duty deaths are related to cancer, and firefighters have a higher risk of cancer than the general public.
