Local governments in China’s three northeastern provinces have listed over 50 Korean cultural traditions under the name of “Korean Chinese (Joseonjok) traditions.” To be clear, this is part of China’s domestic cultural registry — it doesn’t mean UNESCO recognizes these as Chinese in origin. But still, it’s not something Korea can just brush off. In the past, Korean “Nongak” (traditional farmers’ dance) was listed at UNESCO as “Joseonjok Nongak” under China, which set a pretty worrying precedent.
