At the Golden Globes on Sunday (11 January), Wanda Sykes accepted the ‘Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television’ award on behalf of Ricky Gervais — who was not in attendance — and turned the moment into a heartfelt tribute.
Sykes, who presented the award, thanked Gervais for not being in attendance that night, stating “Ricky Gervais I love you for not being here… because if you win I get to accept the award on your behalf, and you’re gonna thank God and the trans community.”
Upon revealing Gervais had won the award Sykes made good on her promise and thanked both God and the trans community on Gervais’ behalf.
Gervais' 2022 ‘SuperNature’ special was deemed to be transphobic by the GLAAD media organisation, especially after he joked about a debate about public bathroom access for trans people. Gervais also previously responded to criticism about his anti-trans jokes, stating he has “a right” to make such comments.
