Alex Dallmeyer learned first aid skills from the Red Cross for his summer job as a lifeguard, but he never thought he’d apply them to his own mother. Last August, his family was out on a boat when his mother severely injured her leg. “Her left leg on the back of her calf was split open,” he recalled. “I sat with her on the ground and held her leg up with pressure. I was terrified but tried my best to keep her conscious.” Their family made it back to the dock and his mother was taken to the hospital by helicopter. “I really learned what it takes to keep someone alive and safe in a time of need. Yes, I’m a lifeguard, but nothing could’ve prepared me for that,” Alex said.
