Last year, on the second day of school, Michelle Michaud, a Special Education Tech at the ACADIA Academy in Lewiston, Maine, became a lifesaver. It happened during lunch in the cafeteria, when Michelle witnessed a first grader abruptly jump up from his chair after consuming a piece of his lunch. He initially appeared like he was going to be sick, which prompted Michele to grab a garbage can so the child could vomit. ➡️ That’s when she realized something was wrong. “He had those panicked eyes and I realized that it wasn’t him just being sick. He was choking,” Michelle recalled. A chicken nugget was lodged in the boy’s airway, causing him to turn red and struggle to breathe. Michelle didn’t hesitate to react, using her knowledge in CPR to quickly administer three to four abdominal thrusts. Her quick actions helped dislodge the food from the child’s throat, allowing him to breathe again. “If I wouldn’t have been standing there knowing what to do, he would have collapsed,” she said. ...
