When the California floods hit in January 2023, Norma Jiménez never imagined floodwater would make it into their second floor apartment. “I never thought the water would get this close, and then it was everywhere. The water was surrounding our home and it even came through the laundry dryer vents," said Norma. After the flood, Norma and her 14-year-old dog, Pepé, made their way to a Red Cross emergency response vehicle (ERV), where volunteers were handing out hot meals, snacks and water throughout the neighborhood for several days.
