Clara Barton used this ambulance at Camp Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia before the 1898 outbreak of the Spanish-American War. Red Cross nurses at Camp Thomas cared for U.S. Army soldiers who suffered from typhoid that summer.
The ambulance was later taken to Clara's home in Glen Echo, Maryland, where the American Red Cross was headquartered for a period of time.
Today, you can see the ambulance on display at the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington D.C.
