Grain farmers are in a tough spot and it’s only getting harder. When you see headlines about subsidies or “bridge payments,” it’s easy to assume farmers are rolling in free money. But that narrative ignores the reality on the ground. Nearly every input cost has gone up. Seed, fertilizer, fuel, land and insurance, while the price farmers receive for their grain continues to fall. That equation simply doesn’t work. It’s unsustainable, and many farmers are barely hanging on. Are there bad farmers taking advantage of the situation? Absolutely. But the overwhelming majority are good farmers doing everything they can to adapt, improve, and survive. Instead of condemning them for trying to stay afloat, we should be looking for ways to support those who are working to diversify, innovate, and do things the right way. I’ve never met a farmer asking for sympathy or a pat on the back. But if you get to thinking about it this week just check in one a farmer you know and ask them how they’re doing....
