The EU’s border and coast guard agency, Frontex, said that the number of irregular crossings at the bloc’s external borders fell by 26% in 2025, to nearly 178,000. That is less than half the number recorded in 2023 and the lowest level since 2021.
Despite the decline, Frontex warned that conditions at Europe’s borders remain unpredictable. Migration pressure can shift quickly between routes, driven by conflict, instability and smuggling networks.
The agency also said the European Union is already dealing with attempts by hostile actors to exploit migration flows to put pressure on its external borders.
