The ucsdwc started in 1973 as a student organization at UC San Diego due to women students' concerns about their unique needs being overlooked by the University. Despite efforts to establish a Women's Center on campus, the WRC remained volunteer-run until the '90s. Finally, in 1990, the WRC and the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women began advocating for a Women's Center that would include all students, post-docs, staff, and faculty. The University approved the Women's Center in 1995, and it opened on October 14, 1996, serving as a welcoming space for fostering awareness, education, and community at UC San Diego. Today, students visiting the WRC can find many programs, including STEMtorship Network, the VOICES Leadership Program, and internship & volunteer opportunities that work toward social justice, positively contributing to the campus and the Women's Center.
