118 years ago today, President Theodore Roosevelt designated Pinnacles as a national monument. Here are some fun facts to celebrate its birthday and

✍️ It became a national park in 2013 when President Barack Obama signed the designation into law.
🌋 The park is named for its rocky “pinnacles” that were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. This same activity also created the park's famous talus caves.
🦅 Pinnacles’ rugged terrain provides ideal breeding habitat for birds of prey. The park is home to golden eagles, California condors, and prairie falcons.
In 2001, National Park Trust accepted the donation of the Bear Valley School, a one-room schoolhouse signficant to the community's history, and donated it to the park. Learn more at
