Movie tie-ins are nothing new to theme park projects. But as with much of its work, Studio Ghibli is blazing its own path with a new kind of amusement park—one that doesn’t involve the usual adrenaline-spiking rides. Instead, the famed Japanese production house is bringing its anime classics like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke to life through a nature-centric experience.
Working in partnership with the Aichi prefecture in Japan and Chunichi Shimbun newspaper, the team aligned the project to a core theme explored in the studio’s movies: the raw beauty and power of nature. And that vision extended through the project site and specs: The team chose to build within the Aichi Expo Memorial Park in Nagakute—and it’s constructing the park around the trees, not chopping them down.
