Legislation to advance a 2026 ballot measure to restore funding to scientific research now stipulates that any pharmaceuticals created by the research would be discounted for Californians.
SB 895 was introduced in response to President Donald Trump’s administration’s cuts to research funding, which suspended nearly $584 million in funding to UCLA alone. The bill would issue $23 billion in bonds to support scientific research.
The bill was announced by Sen. Scott Wiener, UC representatives and the United Auto Workers union during a press conference this morning. Wiener is currently running for Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s seat in San Francisco.
