Meghan Jarosz stayed at one of our shelters after Hurricane Ian hit. She lost her wheelchair and was using one provided by the shelter. When Red Cross nurse Helen Jacobson learned that Meghan had disabilities that cause increased pain and challenges when using her upper body, she reached out to a local partner organization to see if they could help. Travis Taylor, from the Center for Independent Living- Gulf Coast (CILGC), an organization that serves individuals with disabilities, came to the shelter to deliver a powered wheelchair that can be either pushed or go about 4 miles once fully charged. “This was actually a miracle…what he did was phenomenal,” said Meghan with tears in her eyes. At Red Cross shelters, we have health service volunteers who are licensed healthcare professionals that can help assess needs and provide care as needed.
