Faced with multiple student shooting deaths in the past year, desmoinespublicschools' officials are proposing to almost double the district’s security budget. The increased spending would pay for placing metal detectors in middle and high schools, hiring additional public safety patrol officers and adding middle school monitors. The school safety discussion came on the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Jose Lopez-Perez, 15, outside of East High School in Des Moines on March 7, 2022.
