The month of March is Dolphin Awareness Month, and we would like to share some incredible facts about the bottlenose dolphins on the island. Described as the smartest marine animal, the typical lifespan is around 40 years in the wild. Named "Step," our matriarch dolphin known for strand feeding is estimated to be around 30 years old.
Bottlenose dolphins have two stomachs. One to store food, and the other to digest, ultimately eating up to 33lbs. of fish a day. They do not use their mouths to communicate, but instead, use a series of whistles with their blowhole.
Federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is important that their behaviors are not disturbed when being observed. It is recommended by the MPP that you keep a distance of 150 feet or more via water vessel, and 30 feet on land.
