“Tunnel vision” versus awareness:
One common lament that I hear from many coaches and goaltender development professionals is that there is a tremendous amount of athletic talent and technical skill with goaltenders, but the ability to read the play is sometimes lacking.
I am posting two clips from tonight’s training session with phcmidget prospect rocketdagoalie. In the first clip, it was his first rep after we explained what the drill is, what the objective of the drill is and what skills we are looking to enhance. In this particular drill, player one skates off the half wall has to tag up at the dot and then spins down for a bad angle drive while player two can release anywhere from behind the net. The reason for the spin is to simulate and being able to identify times where players are not looking at the net, i.e. scrums on the wall or having their back turned to the net.
