“Water came in like 8, 9, 10 inches over a period of, maybe, 16-17 hours. [My home] was severely flooded. Water was coming through my basement window and up under my back porch steps. It ruined everything.” Last year, military veteran Larry Burnett was one of the many people who experienced severe flooding in St. Louis, Missouri. The area was hit with record rainfall and flash floods, leaving people’s homes and businesses submerged in up to 10 feet or more of water. For several weeks, Red Cross disaster teams worked around the clock to provide people with a safe place to stay, replace their lost and damaged medication, and even deliver food and relief supplies by boat to areas cut off due to damaged roads and bridges.
