“It doesn’t matter whether you lose a spouse, or you lose your home and everything in it, you have to go through all those steps of grieving – and we’re seeing all of them here." Adele Lott, a retired special education counselor, was inspired to become a volunteer following the deadly floods in eastern Kentucky in 2021. While on her first deployment as a disaster mental health volunteer, Adele was there to comfort people who stayed in our Red Cross shelters after Hurricane Ian. Our Red Cross disaster mental health volunteers play a critical role in our shelters and the community. They help promote resiliency, offer ways to cope with stress and tragedy and connect people to long-term care resources when needed. ❤️ #HelpCantWait when someone loses a spouse, their home or everything they own following a disaster.
