Design shouldn’t discriminate. Yet when it comes to furniture, people with disabilities or seniors who want to continue living in their homes are often forced to shop at specialty retailers that don’t always deliver on style. So U.S. home furnishings giant potterybarn launched a project to develop 150 pieces designed specifically for individuals with mobility challenges. To ensure that different pieces would comply with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Pottery Barn sought input from accessible design experts and its own employee disability education and advocacy group. But the team also took care not to sacrifice style—finding ways to ensure the more inclusive offerings maintained the brand’s upscale look and feel.
