WWE is reportedly pivoting its talent recruitment strategy for 2026, shifting focus back to the independent scene after years of prioritizing college athletes through the "Next In Line" (NIL) program.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the company plans to hold a substantial number of tryouts specifically for independent wrestlers throughout the year.
“The company will be holding a significant amount of tryouts this year with indie talent and they've done another about-face... regarding less college athletes and more indie talent,” Meltzer reported.
The report indicates that William Regal and Gabe Sapolsky are spearheading the initiative to scout the independent circuit. Regarding the criteria for new recruits, Meltzer noted that WWE is prioritizing look and verbal ability, seeking individuals with "the right kind of body" who can perform promos.
