I was lucky today.
As I walked through the desert looking left and right for those in distress and the deceased I just happened to look down and spotted this beautiful but deadly animal. It's early spring and it was sunning itself in the open desert. I stopped just 3 feet from stepping directly on it.
I wasn't wearing the snake guards that we have back at the Battalion HQ in Ajo Arizona. It was so cool this morning I thought there was no need for them. It would have ripped through my hiking pants with no effort.
Miles and miles from any emergency services and no cell phone coverage would have meant a challenging effort of survival.
Migrants die by the thousands along our border every year. They die in silence and in secret by design. Our policies combined with the weaponized remote borderlands kill, conceal and erase the evidence. Envenomation is only one of the many causes of death migrants face in these areas.
