In the final day of our search with the Jesuits in the desert west of El Paso, after locating two more sites with human remains — one clearly a woman, her hair still tangled with extensions and a black tie half-buried in the sand — we paused. We stopped, not to search, but to pray. At a quiet, protected place in the desert stands a small memorial for a young traveler who died here a few short years ago. Their family asked that it be made.
