Nearly 60 oil and gas companies have contaminated surface or groundwater in the Chaco region according to New Mexico state data. Enterprise Operating is by far the worst water polluter, clocking 119 water contamination reports out of 415. The second biggest water polluter in Greater Chaco is XTO, owned by ExxonMobil, with 34 cases of water contamination, followed by BP with 29. These companies have raked in billions in profits and paid nearly nothing in fines for contaminating groundwater. What’s more, is that Enterprise and XTO are top spillers in New Mexico to this day.
