“It was Oct. 22, 2018 – my birthday – and my husband and I went to lunch and went shopping after that. My nephew, he was living with us, called me and told me there was a fire in the garage. We lost pretty much everything. The house was still standing, but the garage and our bedrooms were destroyed. We had smoke damage all through the house and in the basement, so we lost pretty much all our belongings. We were getting ready to go to my daughter's house when a Red Cross volunteer pulled up. They introduced themselves and told us they were sorry about the fire. They said that they would be able to give us a gift card to help us buy the necessities, things that we needed, and I was totally shocked. I wasn't expecting them to be there for us, you know, with it not being a major hurricane or flooding event, just a home fire. I wasn't expecting that at all.
