More than a million people across Louisiana and Mississippi, including much of New Orleans, remained without power after Hurricane Ida tore across the coastal states earlier this week. Damage from the Category 4 storm—one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the region—has been extensive. Emergency response teams have fanned out across communities suffering from the storm surge and subsequent flooding, rescuing hundreds of people. Thousands more remained in shelters. Ida’s “catastrophic intensity” so impacted Louisiana’s power grid that the Entergy utility company said it could be weeks before electricity is fully restored to homes in the storm’s direct path.
