“I have a place to sleep because of the Red Cross...a place to sleep." Mike Petit was just released from the hospital when he arrived at one of our shelters after Hurricane Ian hit Florida. During the storm surge Mike, who is an Army veteran, lost his wallet, phone and medication to treat diabetes and high blood pressure. Mike shared some of the challenges he’s faced recently and expressed how happy he is to have a roof over his head and a safe place to sleep but needs immediate help with replacing his medication. He recently became blind in one eye due to diabetes and is very concerned about not having his medication. A Red Cross nurse helped replace his medication and assist in monitoring his blood sugar levels by advising him on what to eat and drink while in the shelter.
