“We’ve heard about the Red Cross all our lives, but we never dreamed we’d be the ones needing assistance.” Larry and Joyce Greiner, who are both in their 80s, rode out Hurricane Ian in their Fort Myers home with their two rescue dogs. They clung to the mattress from their bed as water swiftly rose to over four feet in the house. This was the home they planned to retire in, and now, they are going through the grueling process of rebuilding everything they lost. Immediately after the storm, the Greiners obtained essential resources at Red Cross distribution sites, including the replacement of items like Joyce’s eyeglasses and blood pressure cuff she uses to monitor her health.
