It’s Indigenous Peoples Day: Originally known as Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates, recognizes, and honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous People, not just in America, but around the world. Columbus Day commemorated the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, but overlooked the introduction of disease spread to the indigenous people and the millions of people killed in order to take their homeland, which led to genocide. Replacing Columbus Day with a National Indigenous Peoples’ Day moves us closer to a true U.S. history and acknowledging the wrongs done to tribes.
