Meet our client: the gopher tortoise! 🐢 Gopher tortoises are experts at living underground. Their shovel-like front legs and thick back legs help them dig intricate burrows, which they can enter and exit easily thanks to their low-profile shells. They're also team players, sharing their burrows with the rare Florida mouse, endangered eastern indigo snake and 360+ other species. When they aren't digging burrows or seeking out an ideal mate, these reptiles spend their days chomping on leafy greens under open canopies of pine trees. Sounds like the good life, right? Sadly, like many of our clients, gopher tortoises are in a fight for their lives. Urban sprawl continues to destroy their rapidly dwindling habitat, yet the usfws denied giving them lifesaving federal protections throughout the majority of their range in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
