About 70% of North American birds migrate, and 80% of those do so at night because it’s cooler and safer. They rely on celestial navigation and Earth’s magnetic field. But our growing light pollution from cities can confuse them. According to International Dark Sky Association, hundreds of millions of migratory birds die annually by colliding with illuminated buildings and towers or getting off course in the city. The UN’s Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife encourages people and cities to dim lights during migration season.
