The Portland Children’s Museum, with its kid-size theater, clay studio, pretend grocery store and make-believe veterinary clinic, attracted a quarter-million visitors annually until its abrupt closure in 2021 amid the pandemic. Now, two years later, parents, grandparents and children’s advocates in and around Portland have been thinking about how to replace what they lost – and how to serve an increasingly diverse community of kids across a broad region.
