June 15th is #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay, and we want to draw attention to the issue of abuse facing too many of our elder neighbors and loved ones. An estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse and/or neglect by a caregiver. Cases of elder abuse are widely underreported; a conservative estimate is that only 1 in 44 cases are actually reported. Even more cause for concern is that as the general population ages, more cases of elder abuse will occur. Something that we can all do is come together to be educated on the issue. Elder abuse takes many forms from physical to sexual abuse, to financial scams.
