June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, an annual observance to raise awareness of the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s and to educate people about brain health, including risk factors for developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder thought to affect 6.2 million U.S. residents age 65 and older. By 2050, that figure is expected to more than double to 12.7 million. Majority of Meals On Wheels West clients are over 65 years old and many are homebound due to having Alzheimer's or dementia. Isolation or loneliness in older adults is associated with a 50% increased risk of developing dementia and a 26% increased risk of all-cause mortality, according to the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. We are here to support our isolated clients by delivering food to them, giving them consistent wellness checks and resources to extra care if needed.
