Today on Martin Luther King Day I think about how volatile things were in June 2020 during the BLM Movement. As a single dad at the time, it was critical to show my kids 5 and 6 why this movement mattered. It wasn’t just for black people but it was for brown people, Latinos, and yes, the LGBTQ community. Discovering this art piece by my friend, Christine, helped me do it in a way that felt age appropriate. And as luck would have it, one of the BLM murals you’ll see at end, was done right on our very own street on Joralemon in front of the courthouse. Thinking about how my kids today treat people and their friends around them almost 6 years later, I’m reminded today, it’s never too early to show them what it is to be compassionate and empathetic. And now, more than ever, we need to show ALL of our kids at every age, why all of this matters.
