One of many homes that were destroyed by tornadoes that swept through Mississippi was Jeffrey Russell’s childhood home in Rolling Fork. He was visiting with his mom when he saw the violent storm approaching, and after ushering his mom and three kids into an interior bedroom and onto the bed, he used his body to cover and shield them. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the damage left behind was horrifying. “We were waiting on daylight to see how bad it was,” he recalled. “We woke up to heartbreak.” As Jeffrey and others process the devastation and plan their next steps, Red Cross volunteers are working around the clock to ensure they have a safe place to stay, warm meals, relief items and other essential resources.
