J.D. Brink was inspired to become an NOHRedCross blood donor for two reasons: his father and sister. Throughout his life, J.D.’s father, David, was an avid blood donor. That commitment grew when J.D.’s sister, Ashley, lost her battle with leukemia at only 4 years old.
J.D. remembers a sign that hung in their garage asking visitors to remove their shoes in order to keep germs out when Ashley’s blood counts were low. He also remembers a sign of rules that were hung on the closet door for him and his brother when his mom and sister would spend weeks, sometimes months, at a children’s hospital in Wisconsin.
When his father passed away in 2021, the list of rules still hung in the closet. J.D. says his dad donated roughly 9 gallons of blood in his lifetime. ❤️
