Who is Weng Weng and WHY should you care? He is, quite simply, the 2’9” Filipino James Bond who made a bunch of movies in the 1980s and then disappeared. Aussie Andrew Leavold was running Brisbane’s equivalent of Thomas Video when he became obsessed with Pinoy film, particularly Weng Weng. His 7-year quest to find the diminutive star became a documentary and is now a fascinating behind-the-scenes book about the wrong turns and detours along the way, a tale that includes Imelda Marcos, Filipino stuntmen, and plenty of blind alleys. Through it all, Leavold persevered with a passion and determination that reminds us of our own. The filmmaker/author will read from the book and also screen LOST FILMS OF WENG WENG, a compilation of the actor’s work that has never been seen outside of the Philippines. We’ll also have delicious food from Sarap Filipino pop-up.
