Below is an excerpt when Maria describes the process of her piece “Excavation Growth Units”: “It consists of these two platforms that are wrapped in vinyl. In the platforms are mixtures of limestone, soil, silicone, mushrooms, and sphagnum moss. Different things are also changing. The brick that’s contained in one of the platforms is efflorescing, meaning that different components on the inside of the brick are leaching onto the outside throughout the exhibition. This will also shift due to humidity changes.” Maria Simmons (she/they) is a hybrid artist who investigates potentialized environments through the creation of hybrid sculpture and installation.
