Humboldt penguins get their name from the cold, nutrient-rich Humboldt Current that flows along the coasts of Chile and Peru — and fuels life in these waters. 🐧🌊 Built for the sea, these penguins spend much of their lives swimming, with some recorded journeys lasting more than six days before they return to land. But as much as they love being in the water, they have to eventually come ashore to the rocky coastline they call home to rest, mate, and tend to their young. That’s just one of the reasons protection here matters. In Chile’s Humboldt Archipelago, local communities, Oceana, and our allies worked together to create a Multiple-Use Marine Conservation Area — safeguarding vital areas for Humboldt penguins, blue whales, and other iconic species, while also promoting sustainable development for local communities who depend on a healthy ocean. 💙 #PenguinAwarenessDay
